“So who is he?” asked Sophia as she poured her daughter a cup coffee.
Selena giggled “Whose who?” she asked, trying to play dumb.
“Don’t lie to me, a mother knows. We haven’t been seeing much of you around here lately, not to mention every time I call you seem to be busy. I want to know who the gentleman is that’s occupying so much of my daughter’s time.” Sophia gazed at her intently as she sipped her spiced mocha blend.
Selena laughed “I should have known that I can’t keep anything from you.”
“And you shouldn’t try to” Sophia joked.
“Well actually I wasn’t trying to keep it from you; I just haven’t gotten around to telling you about him. His name is Kevin and he’s wonderful mom. He treats me like a queen.”
“As he every well should, what does he do?”
“He’s a business man, he owns several gas stations, a dry cleaner among other things, plus he’s in the process of trying to open a night club.”
“My goodness sounds like he’s very successful; I love a man that’s ambitious. Your father will love that.” Sophia’s face gleamed with pleasure.
Selena glanced down at her cup and let out a heavy sigh. “Yeah about dad, mom there’s something I need to tell you about Kevin.”
“What is it dear?”
“He’s black”
Selena paused and waited for her mother’s response.
Sophia’s face turned beet red. She sat silently sipping from her mug.
“Well? Say something.”
“Nothing to say dear”
“Mom the look on your face says it all. I know you’re upset. We may as well talk about it now and get it over with.”
“I just don’t understand why you couldn’t have chosen a successful white man. How serious is it with this man?”
“Mom I didn’t choose to be with anyone, it just happened. He’s a wonderful man and he treats me good; actually he treats me better than many of the white guys I have dated. And to answer your question we are very serious, I love him. I wish you and daddy would just stop being so close minded” Selena protested.
“Selena you know how your father and I feel about interracial dating. We’re not prejudice we just feel like each race should be with their own kind. I guess I can deal with it as long as you aren’t planning on marrying this man.”
“The hell if you guys aren’t prejudice” Selena thought. “So what if we do end up getting married? Are you guys gonna disown me? Your face was lit up like a Christmas tree when you thought he was white. Why should it matter if he’s black if he makes me happy?”
Sophia was growing increasingly uncomfortable with the conversation. “Let’s just drop it. I won’t make any mention of this to your father.”
“Mention of what?” asked Selena’s brother Mitch as he popped in the side door. He was on his way home from work and spotted Selena’s car in their parent’s driveway and stopped by. “I saw your car and figured I better catch you when I can since you’re always MIA” laughed Mitch as he gave his sister a hug.
“Hey Mitch” Selena tried to hide the displeasure on her face as she hugged him back.
“Hey son how was work today?”
“Hey mom, you know how it goes; same crap different day. Why is everyone looking so glum? What were you guys talking about when I came in?” he asked as he peeked in the pot Sophia had simmering on the stove.
“Your sister’s boyfriend is black” Sophia responded while giving Selena a smug look.
Mitch almost choked on the sip of ice tea he had just taken. “Oh Shit! My how the mighty have fallen!” he chuckled.
“What a jerk!” Selena thought. “You’re an asshole Mitch; I can’t believe you just said that” Selena ranted.
“You two watch your language in this house” Sophia firmly ordered.
“I’m sorry mom” Selena responded as she sat her cup in the sink and started gathering her belongings to leave.
“Yeah sorry mom” Mitch grumbled.
“Selena you don’t have to leave dear. Mitch you need to apologize to your sister.”
“Sigh… I’m sorry sis but I thought better of you. What made you step over to the dark side anyway?” Mitch was just as, if not more prejudice than his parents when it came to mixed relationships and he made no qualms about hiding it.
“You need to mind your own damn business Mitch, I have never commented on anyone you have dated” Selena snapped as she slipped on her trench and threw her purse over her shoulder.
“Look I said I was sorry, and besides you couldn’t say anything the women I’ve dated. I’ve never turned against my own kind.”
“Turned against my own kind? Mom I’ll see you later I’m out of here.”
“Selena don’t go” Sophia pleaded. “Your brother didn’t mean that.”
“The hell if I didn’t, I’m sorry mom but I can give her a pass for this crap” Mitch glowered.
Selena shook her head and didn’t bother responding. Instead she brushed past him as she headed out the side door.
“Selena come back, let’s talk about this.”
“Nothing to talk about, weren’t those your words mom? I’ll call you later” With that she pulled out the driveway and sped off.
“Why did you have to react like that? Sophia asked Mitch angrily. “You are short tempered just like your father.”
“Come on mom; you can’t tell me you are happy about this.”
Sophia stared out the window and pondered what had just transpired. Regardless of how she felt about her daughter dating a black man she didn’t want to lose her over it. “Sigh… It’s really none of our business son. Selena is a grown woman.”
“Wait till dad hears about this. I wonder whose business it will be then.”
Sophia whipped her head around. “He’s not going to hear about it, it’s Selena’s business and she will tell him when she feels the time is right. Meanwhile don’t you go blabbing it all around, and that includes telling your brother” she demanded.
Mitch stood there in silence and took his last gulp of tea.
“Do you hear me Mitch?”
“Yeah yeah I hear you….”
